Giacometti’s figurative sculptures have an eerie sense about them. Their unproportionally long limbs and skinniness make them seem creepy and unnerving. Furthermore, their grey, textured skin makes them seem like dead beings wandering the Earth.
I really like the feeling this evoked within the viewer because they also have an odd appeal about them, despite being somewhat scary. I want to create a similar feeling within those who see my work . To do so, I experimented with creating smaller personified vessels.
However, these didn't seem to work as well as my other experiments. They seemed too cute and comedic instead of the eerie effect I was aiming for. Furthermore, the texture was not as successful as my coil built forms - there was not enough surface area on these small ones to recreate the texture I was looking for.
