In creating more texture within my ceramics, I wanted to research and explore special effect glazes. I have a basic understanding of glaze chemistry and can confidently make up and mix my own glazes. However, I don't have a great breath of knowledge in terms of creating more specialist textural glazes for more decorative purposes. Linda Bloomfield is an industry expert on glazes and I've followed her work for a couple of years. A couple of years ago she released a book 'Special Effect Glazes' which talks in detail about the chemistry behind various textural glazes along with accompanying recipes. I found this book in the library and took lots of notes (pictured below) from which I learned a lot. I plan to test these on both stoneware and earthenware test tiles and eventually layer a variety onto my large earthenware form to experiment.
